Setting up a GMail account with Windows Mail
Setting up Google Mail
Before you can use your GMail account with Windows Mail, you have to log in to your Google mail account and change some settings so that Google will let you download your email.
- First, log in to your Google mail account.
- Next, find the word “Settings,” and press enter.
- Now find the words “Forwarding and POP” and press enter.
- Below the words “Forwarding and POP,” you will see some options about how to download mail from Google.
- Find a radio button labelled “Enable POP for all mail,” and make sure that it is checked.
- Move further down the page until you see the words “when messages are accessed with POP.” Under this text is a combo box. Press enter to open the combo box, and make sure that “Delete GMail’s copy” is selected. Close the combo box by pressing Jaws key + semicolon (this turns on the virtual cursor).
- Finally, move down the page until you find the “Save changes” button, and press space to save the changes we have just made.
Setting up Windows Mail to work with GMail
Before you can use your GMail account with Windows Mail, you have to make a new email account using your GMail settings. You can do this by following the steps described in the Windows Mail notes. When you’ve done that, follow the instructions below:
- Go to the “Tools” menu by pressing alt + t, and press down arrow until you reach the “Accounts” menu item. Press enter to open the “Accounts” dialogue box.
- You are now in the accounts list view, so use the arrow keys to find the account you’ve just made.
- When you’ve found it, press tab until you reach the “Properties” button, and press space to open the “Properties” dialogue box for the account.
- You are now in the “General” properties page, which is the first page of properties for your account. We don’t have to change anything here, so press ctrl + tab until you reach the “Servers” page.
- Now press tab until you find the “My server requires authentication” checkbox, and press space to check it.
- Next press ctrl + tab until you reach the “Advanced” properties page.
- The first item here is an edit box for the outgoing mail server’s port number. Delete the contents of this edit box, and enter the number 465.
- Now press tab once to move to the “This server requires a secure connection” check box, and make sure that it is checked.
- Press tab once to move to the “Incoming mail” edit box. Again, delete the contents of this edit box, and enter the number 995.
- Press tab once to move to the “This server requires a secure connection” check box, and make sure that it is checked.
- Now press tab until you reach the “Ok” button, and press space to save the changes.
- You are now back in the “Internet accounts” dialogue box, so press escape to close it.
Your GMail account should now work with [1].
